The body can experience a variety of muscular and nerve conditions that can become really painful and uncomfortable for those affected. Sciatica and Piriformis Syndrome are two different conditions which cause Sciatica nerve compression with their own set of causes, and treatments. They both present with the similar symptoms and are often misdiagnosed.

Sciatica and Piriformis Syndrome both involve the impingement of the Sciatica nerve. The largest nerve trunk in the body it originates from L4, L5,S1,S2 and S3 spinal roots of the lumbosacral plexus. It runs through the buttock and down the lower limb to the feet.

Piriformis Syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder that is caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle a flat muscle which originates from the anterior sacrum and inserts into the greater trochanter. It is an external rotator of the hip and is involved with almost every movement of the hip.

Signs and symptoms of Piriformis Syndrome start with numbness, tingling, or pain in the hip or lower back. The pain can be severe and extend the length of the sciatica though it is not true Sciatica.

Meanwhile Sciatica is a set of symptoms that irritates or compresses one or more spinal nerve roots in your lower spine, which merge together to form the sciatic nerve. The compression can be caused by a variety of medical conditions, such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis and can be more serious.

Sciatica pain is often categorized as burning, electric or stabbing pain and is usually severe pain. It can be constant with on and off pain. Depending on the cause sciatica can emerge suddenly or gradually.

Piriformis Syndrome is a neuromuscular disorder caused by anatomical changes or compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle which also can affect the length of the sciatic nerve to the feet. The compression causes muscle spasm, sharp pain, numbness, tingling in the low back, hip and down the legs.

Due to the nature of Sciatica if persistent pain it is advised to get an accurate diagnose of the disorder by your

Doctor. Depending on the symptoms the doctor may send you for rehabilitation with the appropriate therapist or imaging to determine the source of the problem if more severe. Depending on the cause over time with muscle strengthening and self care sciatica will often get better. The goal of massage therapy is to decrease your pain and increase your mobility with strengthening and stretching.

Piriformis Syndrome

Massage therapy can help relieve the muscle compression and pain by reducing the muscle hypertonicity or structural shortening of the Piriformis and the surrounding muscles. Client education is important as often the result comes from a poor understanding of proper occupational posture and an inadequate stretching program. This muscle is very forgiving with treatment, proper stretching and self care
